“Warm Bodies” — the rom-zom-com that proves a girl can even love a zombie who ate her boyfriend’s brain — came in tops at the box office on Super Bowl weekend.
As the Los Angeles Times’ Amy Kaufman reports, teenage girls were responsible for the success of "Warm Bodies," which distributor Summit Entertainment said debuted with an estimated $20 million. That’s a pretty impressive beginning, considering the highest-grossing zombie movie, 2009′s “Zombieland,” took in a total of $75.6 million in the U.S. Zombie films aren't normally a monster draw.
With its $20-million debut, the film shuffles — or leaps, if you’re a “boney” from “Warm Bodies” — into the top 10 for the biggest opening weekends for zombie movies.
Boneys are the nastier, beyond-redemption version of zombies in the film, and they add an element of terror to the teen love story. With that combination, “Warm Bodies” has a chance of pulling in more young lovers with its Valentine’s-adjacent opening, as well as zombie-loving adults.
