Carney Plays Down Talk of Radical Policy Change

LONDON—Mark Carney, the Bank of England’s next governor, told a parliamentary committee Thursday that the U.K. should debate its methods of setting monetary policy, though he sounded skeptical notes about any radical change to the inflation-watching regime that has long been the tool of choice in major economies.

Mr. Carney, now the governor of the Bank of Canada, said repeatedly that he thought charging the central bank with holding inflation steady and moderate was the best policy, but he peppered his comments with reflections on how the bank could be more flexible.
