It began as insinuation, though fast flowered into undisguised declaration. Words used to report a killer, Adam Lanza, began with "odd," "aloof" and "a loner," shadowy into "lacked empathy," and finally slipped into "on a autism spectrum" and pang from "a mental illness like Asperger's." By Sunday, it had snowballed into a undoubted charge of indictment and stigmatization.

Whether reporters were directly attributing Mr. Lanza's sharpened uproar to his autism or merely shoddily lumping together really opposite conditions, a fake and damaging messages were abundant.
