Paul Hollywood was, as usual, oppressive with his criticism, destroying the
contestants' ideally shaped cakes with a gash of his fork. Berry was
wearing her favourite flowery blazer and looked even more
bright-eyed-and-bushy-tailed than normal. We got a glance of a finalists'
home lives (the ever-calm Brendan, it turns out, is a Buddhist) and saw the
lapse of aged contestants, who braved a sleet to fake to be carrying fun
during a fĂȘte in a Bake Off garden.
It was a wise finish to a rational array that has had scarcely 6 million
of us glued to the screens for 3 months. Tonight's part was one of
