Scientists have solved an age-old mouser mystery—why there are stripes on a domestic tabby cat—and detected nonetheless another tie between Mittens and her furious cousins.
Studying a genomes of dual groups of tabbies, one with a plumb striped mackerel cloak and a other featuring a blotched pattern, researchers zeroed in on a Taqpep gene which, when mutated, can means tabby stripes to change from mackerel to blotched. This is a same gene already famous to give cheetahs possibly spots or, in a box of a aristocrat cheetah, spots and stripes.
